Afcon Bitzer CO2 as natural refrigerant

Dave Nicholl’s was recently involved in an interesting installation involving CO2 at a large retail store in KZN and here’s what he had to say about it...

The plant was designed by Richard Drinkrow and installed by Mainstream. The compressors are all Bitzer semi-hermetics and are VSD capacity controlled.  Richard has put in the hours and learnt his trade well and it was a privilege to spend time on their site. The pressures involved are high by our normal standards but all the very high pressures are in the plant room. The compressed high pressure CO2 is cooled in a Plate Heat Exchanger and via a special valve, the now cooled gas flashes into liquid/gas where the flash gas is recovered and re-compressed. The receiver/cooler on the Rack collects the liquid CO2 and that goes to the trading floor where it does the normal cooling in the cabinets and cold rooms etc. The LT system has its own dedicated compressor/s on the same Rack.

The work put in by Richard Drinkrow and others including the late Mike Holt prove that this country have some excellent engineers who are among the world's best.

My thanks to Malcolm Green from Fridgemac for arranging my site visit.
